6 Things to Do in NYC Without Spending a Dime
NYC is an expensive city, FACT. But that doesn’t mean you have to waste your weekend on your couch binge-watching old episodes of Game of Thrones. With a MetroCard in hand, the city is your oyster. Catch a flick under the stars, bronze on the beach, or take a stroll along one of the many beautiful riverfront parks. Check out our free recommendations and save your cash for a rainy day.
Movies in the Park
What a great way to end the day. Invite some friends, spread a blanket, and enjoy a flick under the stars. The NYC department of Parks screens movies in all five boroughs. Take in some stunning city views as the sun goes down and the big screen illuminates. SummerScreen has been screening cult classics in McCarren park for 12 years. They also have live music and comedy performances before showtime. So, grab a slice a pizza, some snacks from the bodega, and enjoy yourself a free movie.
Night at the Museum
Every first Saturday, the Brooklyn Museum hosts a night of art and music fueled excitement. Kick off the new month by visiting one of Brooklyn’s most cherished cultural institutions. The admission fee is waived so you can enjoy performances, art workshops, and guided tours without spending a penny. If, however, you want to sip a glass wine, refreshments are available.
If you want to see what’s hot in the contemporary art scene, make your way over to Chelsea. You can wander through both intimate and large gallery spaces. Expect to see the newest installations, paintings, prints, and sculptures. So, skip the museum lines and head to Chelsea. Timing is key and Thursday nights are best. Grab a glass of free wine, nibble on some cheese, and take in the scene. Don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation, it’s a great way to meet new people.
Gather a group of friends and head to Prospect Park to see some truly unforgettable performances. As the music fills the air and your troubles melt like lemon drops, you’ll begin to understand why so many New Yorkers treasure these free outdoors concerts.
Take the ferry to Governors Island, a peaceful oasis nestled in the NY harbour. You’ll feel miles away form the hustle and bustle of the city. Check out imaginative art installations, lounge on comfy hammocks, or have a picnic all while taking in the stunning views of the Statue of Liberty. This is by far one of the most underrated parks in NYC and a perfect way to spend the day without dropping a lot of hard earned cash.
I’m on a boat!
If you want to see the Statue of Liberty in all its glory, hop on the Staten Island Ferry just before sunset to see her glow from the open air decks of this free ferry. If you’re planning a day trip to Staten Island, a short bus ride from the ferry station will lead you to Snug Harbour Cultural Center and Botanical Garden, a beautiful garden dotted with historical homes dating back to the 1800s when this 83-acre campus served as a home for retired sailors. Ahoy!
