New Yorkers probably consume enough beer each year to fill a pool the size of Iceland. So it’s a good thing barrel-busting prohibition agents are a thing of the past because breweries are popping up left and right. From the banks of the Harlem river to the sandy shores of the Rockaways, there is no shortage of places to wet your whistle. So put on a plaid shirt, strap on a scruffy beard and head to these homegrown breweries (+distillery) scattered across the five boroughs.

This Brooklyn brewery has a bit of a cult following. It’s not uncommon to see people lining up around the block on can release day. Fear not though, the brewery itself is well staffed and even on the busiest of days, the beer keeps flowing. IPAs reign supreme and there are plenty to choose from. You can’t go wrong with one of their double dry hopped beers. If you’re looking for some artwork to make your fridge complete, their can designs are some of the best out there.

Kings County Distillery, Brooklyn Navy Yards

Occupying a former relic of the navy yard, Kings County Distillery is the first legal distillery since Prohibition times. Take a tour to peep the magic in action or enjoy a flight of different whiskeys (chocolate bourbon included!) from their separate tasting room. You may finally learn the difference between bourbon and whiskey. Just take it easy on the cocktails so you can remember which ones you loved.

The Bronx Brewery, Port Morris

A hot spot for day drinkers and foosball enthusiasts alike, the Bronx Brewery is just another reason why a trip to The Bronx should be on your radar. Whether you’re looking to sip on a hazy pale ale or crisp pilsner, there’s a beer for every taste. If you’re looking to squeeze in a lil more patio time before the temperature dips, head down for their annual backyard closing party, Boogie Down Classic (Oct 13).

Fifth Hammer Brewing Company, Long Island City

Situated in the heart of LIC, this relative newcomer on the block has a large airy taproom and around 15 elixirs to savor. From crisp session IPAs to pineapple-infused sour beers, your taste buds will assuredly get a work out. After a few beers, why not bowl a round at The Gutter just down the street?

Grimm Artisanal Ales, East Williamsburg

This brewery/taproom combo stands out from the crowd. Not only are their beers exceptional, the space itself differs from the the typical dungeon aesthetic of most breweries. Sundrenched and dotted with tropical plants, this beer oasis has a little bit for everyone. Their claim to fame is their beloved sours, but you really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. They also serve up some tasty mediterranean treats (Pulled Lamb Quesadilla) to nibble on as you sip your new favorite brew.
