5 Awesome Spots for Ice Cream Treats in NYC

Since my youth I’ve been able to devour an ice cream cone without batting an eye. Not much has changed.. just the seasons. So as the city comes to a simmering boil and the soles of your shoes begin to melt, you will probably want to cool down with some tasty treats. From classic ice cream parlors to Japanese shaved ice shops, there is no shortage of places to get your ice-cream fix in NYC.  Davey’s Ice Cream This is the kind of place that caters to the no nonsense ice cream crowd. The vibe is laid back and the decor is a cross between classic ice cream parlor and trendy Brooklyn apartment, plants included. They serve all the hits and some more obscure B tracks as well. Nutella Chocolate Chunk and Fresh Strawberry are my personal favs. Creamy scoops of pure delight!  Bonsai KakigoriShaved ice like you’ve never had before. The attention to detail is what makes this treat stand out amongst the others. A traditional Japanese delight dating back to the 11th century, this wonderfully textural icy concoction bursts with natural flavor. It’s like eating a mini work of art. Popular crowd pleasers include Matcha Mountain, Strawberries & Cream, and Mango & Ginger. Van Leeuwen Ice CreamIf you enjoy your ice cream with a touch of vintage class, this is the spot for you. The interior highlights the golden age of ice cream parlors, down to the wood accents and marble countertops. If you’re strolling through Cobble Hill on a sweltering day, make sure to pop in and grab a scoop or two. Sicilian Pistachio, Salted Caramel, and Chocolate Cake.... yumm!   Mr. Softee Ice Cream TruckA friend of mine was almost side swiped by a Buick while chasing after the fading melody of the neighborhood ice cream truck. The summer siren of the streets, the ice-cream truck never fails to deliver. Drawing kids and adults alike, Mr.Softee is a symbol of summertime in the city. You can’t go wrong with a cherry dipped vanilla soft serve!      Republic of Booza Booooooza is the stretch armstrong of the ice-cream world. This traditional ice cream of the Middle East and Turkey is made of a magical ingredient called sahlab, which provides it with the ability to resist melting. Considered to be one of the oldest forms of ice cream in the world, its unique elasticity and delicious natural flavoring make this a must-try of the summer.    Check out our neighborhood guides for more things to do in beautiful Brooklyn!Follow us on Instagram @brooklynschooloflanguages By Cory Keny
